The Maker Station is a recently formed makerspace in Marietta, Georgia. Our vision is to be a leading contributor in the maker community by providing tools, instruction, and a creative environment for all ages in order to foster the do-it-yourself spirit embodied by the maker movement.

A makerspace is a community-oriented, shared workspace where people with common interests can learn, share, and collaborate while working with any and all types of construction materials or media. A percentage of monthly member dues is reserved for purchase of materials, supplies, and equipment.
Special events and projects may require additional fees to cover the cost of project specific materials.

== What happens if I break a tool? ==

There is no cost or penalty for breaking tools, we understand that these things happen.
However we need assess the situation and decommission tools to prevent the next person from unknowingly using a broken tool.

== Kids? Are kids welcome, kid activities? ==
While require any active members to be Adults, kids are definitely welcomed. Most of the Station's board members have kids of various ages and we certainly intend to make the space kid friendly and welcoming to families.
That being said, the Maker Station is primarily a work space for tinkerers and hobbyists to talk shop, compare notes, and collaborate on projects. The space does contain dangerous power tools and sometimes hazardous materials. Our goal is to keep the space PG-13. The space is not a day care and kids can not be left unattended.

== What about getting a forge, blacksmithing, welding, metal fabricating, auto lift, etc? ==
We are all excited to make big awesome things that require fire power... however, we are currently not equipped to supply all of these. In our new location, we do have limited capability for hot-work outside the loading dock door. No hot-work should be performed inside the facility and only outside with proper preparation, training and safety equipment available. Prior to performing any hot-work, please discuss your project with the board to make sure it is within guidelines and proper procedures and training are in place.

Unfortunately permitted auto work is also limited. Our lease forbids any form of oil, coolant, other automotive fluid use within the space, and vehicles can not be left overnight.

Equipment at the space is constantly changing due to generous donations and the needs of the members. An attempt to catalog them can be found on t the [[Equipment]] page.

== [[Access to the Space]] ==
If you would like to visit the space, the best way is to attend an open house or other event as published on our [http://www.meetup.com/Cobb-County-Makers-Meetup/ Meetup page]. This is the best way to find which events are scheduled in the space. You may find members there at other hours, but since you never can tell, your best bet is to check the calendar. Once you join and become a member of the space, you will be given a card to allow you access to the facility. You can use this to come and go as needed to work on your own projects and make use of the space. You will need to adhere to the guidelines around ingress/egress to ensure a safe and enjoyable working environment.

== Lights and Appliances==
To conserve power usage for the space, please turn off unnecessary lights in the space. Please use lights, fans, and equipment as needed for safety and project work, but turn them off when finished. When leaving make sure all lights are out.

== Usage and Maintenance ==
We are all part of this community and as we use the space, things will get messy. Please take time to put your projects away as best you can and clean up any messes or safety hazards (even if they are not your own) so that we can keep this an enjoyable place for everyone. Members will have storage bins for their use. Guests should take any of their project materials with them when they leave. The space is there to be used by the members. We do not need committee to decide to move a table. If you need to rearrange something for a project, go ahead. However, if you are considering significant changes, please discuss it with one of the board members. Do not permanently mar/damage/attach things to the physical walls and space without first discussing it with the board members. That's not to stifle your creativity, we just need to make sure that everyone is on the same page.

==The Space==

During open house or scheduled events, guests can enter/exit as they wish. Members accessing the space at other times, should log your entry and exit time on the sign-in sheet. The sign-in sheet is on a clipboard hanging on the wall behind the main door from the street. Please make sure you sign in and out so we have a log of activity and traffic in the space. Future projects may augment/replace this procedure, but for now, this is how we will access the space.
When leaving, if you are the last one out, make sure the lights are off, and that all doors are locked.

===[[Lobby]]===
The front lobby. This is the main entrance to the space and houses our larger 3d printers, as well as a large screen that can be used for larger classes that don't fit in the class room. It also has our display area for members to show off their work, and a small kitchenette.

===[[Electronics Room]]===
The Electronics Room is between the Board Room and the Members' Storage Room. It contains lots of electronics tools and supplies, including soldering irons, solder, wires, multimeters, fuses, LEDs, and more.

===[[3D Printing Room]]===
The 3d printing room houses (surprisingly) most of our 3D printers. It consists of benches on all walls which hold printers, the 3d printer workstation for starting prints, and the storage for filament.

===[[Classroom]]===
The classroom is open for use to all members, and has a whiteboard, TV, and large table. This is a good place for running smaller classes, game nights, or an area to work on projects in.

===[[Back Lobby]]===
The magical space which is too small to be a full room, but too big not to use. This houses our CAD workstation, fridge, vending machines, and is the access for the bathroom, shop, and member storage room.

Bathroom on the far right in the central back room.

Please help take care of this facility and report any maintenance issues immediately. We are all responsible for keeping this area clean and sanitary. There is no cleaning service.

This is the storage room for member use.

===[[Wood Shop]]===
The wood shop houses our woodworking and general use tools, additional storage, our CNC machines, and our central air/dust collection. The rollup door in the back can be used to bring in material. Our local robotics team, The Mechanisms, has their pit on the office side.

There is a rollup door in back to provide access for larger equipment and supplies. It can be accessed by driving around the building. Watch out for large trucks and loading dock traffic. Do not park/leave your vehicle unattended at the loading dock area. Make sure the rollup door is secured and the rear personnel door is locked when not in use.

We are a volunteer run organization, and the space is the labor of many people. Please respect our space, its resources, and the members who helped build it.

== Shop Policies ==
*Rule #0: Do not be on fire.

*Know where the fire extinguishers, exits, first aid kits, eye wash stations and other safety equipment are located. If you have any concerns, questions, or notice any issues, please raise it in #safety so it can be addressed.

*Eye protection should be worn in the workshop at all times.

*Hearing protection is available and recommended when power and air tools are in use. They can be found at the front of the shop, near the office door.

*Do not wear gloves, loose-fitting clothing, unsecured long hair, ties, scarves or other articles that could become entangled when using any tool with a spinning or moving blade or bit.

*Do not use any tools while intoxicated, under the influence of drugs, or while tired.

*If you’re working alone, make sure someone else knows where you are and when to expect you. Keep your phone charged & close by.

*Closed toe shoes are required in the workshop. Pants with cuffs, open toed shoes and sandals should not be worn while working. If working with very heavy objects, proper protective footwear, like steel toed shoes, are recommended. Reach out in #safety on Slack if you have any questions.

*If you break a tool or find one broken, fix it, or seek help from someone who can. A broken tool is a dangerous tool. NEVER attempt to use damaged or malfunctioning equipment.

*Disconnect power before adjusting, changing blades, repairing or moving any tool. Do not attempt to repair a tool without prior understanding or approval. For questions, please post in #maintenance on Slack

*When in doubt: Ask. If you don’t know how to use a tool, find someone to show you how first. Channels like #3d-printing, #woodworking, and #metalworking are available in Slack

*Read manuals, signs, and wiki pages for tool and machine specific rules. If you are interested in contributing to shop educational resources, please reach out to Ryan Seals or Randy Farmer on Slack for access to add to and edit the wiki.

*Only use tools for their intended purpose. Tools that have been modified for different/additional purposes must be clearly labeled and documented.

*Keep a safe path clear to all exits and emergency equipment, including all fire extinguishers. Questions can be raised in #safety on Slack.

*All spills must be addressed immediately. Spill kit, paper towels, etc. are available. If you are working with something that could potentially spill or drip, please work over brown paper, or use a catch pan. For hazardous materials, attempt to contain, cordon off the affected area, and post in #safety to seek help to properly clean it up and alert membership.

*When you finish working on a project, please return all tools to their proper locations, place cordless tool batteries on their chargers, and ensure any projects or excess materials are put away. Please be courteous and help ensure our other members have a clean space to work. Questions can be raised in #general or #maintenance on Slack.

*Please label projects that need to be left out. If you come across a project that is left out, please leave it alone, or reach out in Slack to try to get in contact with the owner.

*Please clean up after yourself, and be mindful of the dust/debris your work can cause. Dust collection should be used if available, and work areas must be cleaned when finished. Vacuums, brooms, and dust pans are available to assist in this. Sanding of medium to large resin projects MUST be done with some form of dust collection. Please reach out in #maintenance or #safety for questions or suggestions.

*Proper welding PPE is required when using the welders or plasma cutter. All welding must be done outside the back door, and with UV curtains or solid barriers shielding the entrance to the shop, and the backlot behind the space.

*Spray painting (and other aerosol work) must be done outside to avoid overspray damaging tools and equipment and to minimize health and flammability issues. Please be mindful of overspray with our neighbors, as wind can carry it further than expected.

*Do not place food, drinks, in-progress projects, excess materials on tools or shop equipment.

*The shop is for use by Makerstation members. Guests may use the shop only under the direct supervision of a member, who is responsible for ensuring that all safety rules are observed. Specific exception is made for attendees of classes, who must sign the safety waiver.

*Tools and equipment can not be removed from the space without the prior approval of the Board of Directors.

*Do not make any modifications to shop infrastructure, including walls, electrical, plumbing, tools, and storage shelves without prior approval. Please reach out in #modifyingourspace if you're interested in making changes, and to get approval to do so

*Flammable, poisonous, or caustic materials MUST be properly labeled and stored. Any containers of resin or solvents larger than 1 quart are not permitted in the office spaces, and should be stored in the shop flammables cabinet. Radioactive, biological, or other hazardous materials not covered above ARE NOT permitted in the space without expressed approval from the Board of Directors.

*Excess materials in the wood racks or material storage should be labeled. Unlabeled materials may be assumed to be available for general use.

*Do not use the kitchen or food prep areas for chemistry or biology work. Never store any non-food items in a food container.

*You are responsible for the safe AND LEGAL disposal of all waste materials from your projects.

*Please dispose of any food trash in the dumpster, and take out and trash cans where food was placed. Only you can prevent drain flies.

*Alcoholic beverages are not allowed at the space without specific exception. For questions on this, please contact the Board of Directors.

===Automotive Work===
*Work involving automotive fluids, including oil, hydraulic oil, and coolant is not permitted in The Makerstation per our lease.
*Automotive work that does not involve fluids is permitted, but vehicles may not be left at the space overnight. Failure to comply with this may involve the landlord towing any non-permitted vehicles. This is not a policy within our control, and is a condition of our lease. * Pallet Racking - After needing to consolidate our shop, our storage situation has gotten fairly rough. We're looking for 3-4 uprights with 7-8 spans of pallet racking to replace our wooden storage.
* Hand Tools - Though we keep a good stock of pliers, screwdrivers, and other hand tools, we often end up with too many of one size and too few of another. Most importantly, we're always missing 10mm sockets.
* Consumables - Sandpaper, paper towels, saw blades, drill bits, etc. These aren't as exciting as a magical CNC machine, but they are the bread and butter of what keeps our shop functioning. It also can make a stock available for
